  • German language (Deutsch) is a West Germanic language mainly spoken in Central Europe.
  • It is the most widely spoken and is the official or co-official language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, South Tyrol in Italy, Belgium, and Liechtenstein. It is one of the major languages of the world.
  • German is an inflected language and has four cases for nouns, pronouns, and adjectives (nominative, accusative, genitive, dative); three genders (masculine, feminine, neuter); and two numbers (singular, plural). It also has strong and weak verbs.
  • German is the third most commonly spoken foreign language in the EU. It is also the second most widely taught foreign language in the EU after English, the second most commonly used scientific language and the third most widely used language on websites.
  • The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR – an international standard for describing language ability for non-native speakers) describes language ability on a six-point scale, as follows 
  1. A1 & A2 : Elementary Levels
  2. B1 & B2 : Intermediate Levels
  3. C1 & C2 : Expert Levels
  • The International Certification exam is Goethe Exam. It tests one’s language proficiency in Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking.

    1. Beginner’s Level : (A1 Level) Completion of this course enables one to-
      – Use and comprehend basic sentences & expressions of everyday need.
      – Use basic vocabulary for introducing oneself and others. Also speak with others.
      – Communicate in a simple manner when the person spoken to speaks slowly and clearly.
    2. Elementary Level : (A2 Level) Completion of this course enables to-
      – Hold and comprehend conversations related to day-to-day situations (viz. personal or family information, Shopping, workplace, telephonic etc.)
      – Converse on familiar & common topics
      – Describe one’s background and surrounding needs and other things associated with day-to-day activities.
